EVIT culinary students serve over 300 at fundraiser

The East Valley Institute of Technology Education Foundation, Inc. (EVITEF, Inc.) hosted its annual fundraising breakfast this morning. More than 300 guests enjoyed the gourmet offerings prepared and served by EVIT Culinary Arts students. EVIT Chef Michael Turcotte announced the fall inspired menu.

The event sponsor, University of Advancing Technology, was joined by 25 more businesses that support the programs at East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT).

Neil Barna, Sunrise Bank President and Chairperson of EVITEF, Inc. was the Master of Ceremonies for the event.He welcomed former and current students to tell how EVIT has enhanced their lives.
MacGyver Mann is an Aviation student who just did his first solo last week. He thanked the supporters of EVIT for making such a program possible.

Sam and Olga Bender gave the first contribution to begin the EVITEF Foundation in 1999. Each year an award is given in their name to the person who made a great difference at EVIT. This year's award winner is Dr. Art Piccinati who is a Past President and active member of EVITEF.

Funds raised at this event will be used to help students pay for class related expenses such as uniforms, tools or certification testing.

EVIT Students have Penny Wars for United Way

The gloves are off and East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) Mesa United Way Teams are competing to see which students can collect the most pennies. But it isn't just nice penny collecting. Students can sabotage the other teams by putting larger valued coins and paper money into their opponents' jars. The team has to remove an equal value of pennies for all larger denominations...so some of the teams are already in the "hole" for the competition, but garnering big donations for Mesa United Way.

Assemblies were held for all EVIT students with pep rallies led by the four Team Leaders who oversee EVIT's forty programs.

EVIT was honored with the "Heart of Mesa" Award for Mesa United Way in Spring 2010. It is the commitment of the students, staff and administration to be creative and participate on every level for this great organization.

EVIT Law students teach Halloween safety

Three, four and five year old Head Start students took a field trip to the opposite side of the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) campus to learn about Halloween safety from EVIT Law Enforcement students.

The children viewed a slideshow featuring the importance of wearing properly fitted, flame-retardant costumes, as well as candy and Trick-Treating safety. The Law students gave them glow sticks and reminded them to use them as flashlights. Above all, they learned that they must stay with an adult, older sibling, or group when Trick-or-Treating on Halloween or any festival event.

Head Start students were greeted by McGruff, the crime dog and were given coloring books, balloons and candy.

Finally they got to crawl into a police replica squad car to see firsthand what it looks like inside, while the Law students explained all the features,

It was a great reminder to the children to stay safe during the Halloween festivities this weekend.

Half of EVIT students still have Perfect Attendance!

East Valley Institute of Technogy (EVIT) students filled the EVIT auditorium three times to celebrate completing another grade period with perfect attendance. Thanks to contributions from Thorobred Chevrolet, two cars are the incentives to be at school every day.

All EVIT students are in competition for a car that will be spruced up by EVIT's Automotive Technology and Collision Repair classes. But, this year EVIT seniors will have another chance to win a brand new Chevy Cruze as part of General Motors' Chevy Drive for Perfection contest.

Steve Marley, Service Manager of Thorobred Chevrolet, says that this is a chance for industry to promote a perfect attendance work ethic while students are still in training. The drawing will take place on May 23rd!

Odyssey Alternative Fuel Vehicle Day held at EVIT

East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) students got to see the vehicles they will be servicing in the future at today's Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) car show.

The car show is the largest one-day event in the country and was visited by hundreds of people who are interested in the green technology as well as all EVIT classes.

Odyssey tries to educate the nation on AFVs and advanced technology vehicles while creating a sense of social and economic responsibility. The show featured the economic advantages of driving an AFV as well as the environmental benefits.

Representatives from dealerships across the valley were on hand to show the purchase options and the locations of local refueling stations, which are available now.

EVIT students head to AZ Construction Career Days

East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) is sharing in the excitement of the Arizona Construction Career Days being held at the Army National Guard in downtown Phoenix today and tomorrow (October 21st and 22nd). Students are being guided through construction-based demonstrations, and are joining in some hands-on opportunities in building, designing, estimating and much more.

The purpose of the Construction Career Days is to support and promote the construction industry through education and employment. EVIT is hosting an exhibit and participating in the event which helps to train our future workforce. For more information, go to http://www.azccd.com/.
