Cosmo students give kids the royal treatment

About 40 EVIT cosmetology students helped create a magical experience for 80 children from Hope Kids and March of Dimes last week.

The EVIT students partnered with the nonprofits and Disney on Ice to give the children "prince and princess" makeovers, complete with hairstyles, glitter and costumes.


Once the children were looking great, they were taken by limo for a special lunch before attending the Disney on Ice show.


"This experience changed some of the EVIT students forever," cosmetology instructor Pam Devine said. "Seeing the children's excitement and appreciation; our students were so inspired by them."

Cosmetology students at East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) learned that they could be judged in just three seconds without even opening their mouths! Angela Johnson, guest speaker from the Fashion Institute of Design Merchandising (FIDM), demonstrated the power of non-verbal communication skills.

The animated, informative speaker focused on the importance of facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, body language, proxemics (space), haptics (touch), paralanguage and appearances.

Cosmetology instructor, Pam Devine, said the presentation enhances the curriculum in the areas of employability as well as learning to work with others and other cultures. As Cosmetologists, they will work with all members of the community. Today they learned that their non-verbal communication skills are just as important as their verbal skills.

No rest for cosmo

Most EVIT students are on break this summer, which has left the campus feeling a bit empty. But a couple of programs are in summer school mode, including cosmetology.

Cosmetology students need a lot of extra hours of schooling to complete the requirements to become state board certified. So they're working hard over the summer, perfecting their skills.

In Janette Brabb's class, the students spent the week learning a variety of braiding techniques: rope braids, French braids, invisible braids, corn rows. Today, they got to practice what they learned.


Meanwhile, other cosmetology students were working on their cutting and styling techniques on real, live clients.

And the perfect attendance finalists are...

EVIT administrators held two perfect attendance assemblies today to congratulate students who have come to school every single day this year and to draw names out of a basket to see who will have a shot at winning this truck:


The AM students who were picked were Christopher Roberts from Allied Health, and Ashley Hammon from cosmetology:


The PM students were Brenda Garay from MC 10 and Jacob Snider from PMT:


On Monday afternoon, each student will receive a key to try to start the truck. The student whose key starts the truck wins and can drive it home that day! The other three will receive Best Buy gift cards.

Cosmo students do it up, semi-formal style

EVIT cosmetology students donated their time and skills on Friday to style the hair of about 20 Bogle Junior High School girls who were getting ready for their eighth grade semi-formal.

As you can imagine, lots of curling was going on:

EVIT cosmo students volunteer at fundraiser

About two dozen EVIT cosmetology students volunteered on Saturday to help out at a fundraising event for local conjoined twins Emma and Taylor Bailey.


The race/festival event was held at Walker Butte Elementary School in Johnson Ranch. EVIT cosmetology teacher Rochelle Boggs and the students worked at the Paisleys Princess Palace booth, where kids could have their hair styled or colored or play with fun makeup and nail polishes.


All proceeds from the booth will help pay for Emma and Taylor's medical bills.

EVIT cosmetology students hold Haiti fundraiser

EVIT cosmetology students and teachers are donating their time and skills on Wednesday to raise money for those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

Join us for cosmetology's "Haircuts for Haiti" event. Community members can stop by anytime on Wednesday, Jan. 20 from 1 to 6:30 p.m. for a haircut. The only cost is a donation; all proceeds will go to the help the relief efforts in Haiti.

Appointments are optional, but not necessary. And if you don't need a haircut but still want to help, stop by and drop off your donations. Any and all donations are welcome! (Make checks payable to the Red Cross.)

What a Ball!

Cosmetology students put on a Masquerade Ball and Hair Show Competition on campus today to show off their creativity with hair, make-up and costume ensembles.

First-year cosmetology students created looks based on an era, such as the 1960s or 1980s.



Second-year students paired up and each team chose Fantasy Masquerade theme. Here is Zeus' wife:

The students will hold another show for family and friends at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 in the main auditorium in Building 1. Admission is $5.

Become a licensed aesthetician or cosmetologist!

Attention future aestheticians and cosmetologists: EVIT still has space in its adult programs, which start Monday, Nov. 9!

EVIT offers a wide array of adult classes at competitive prices. Tuition for the two-year adult cosmetology program is $10,800; tuition for the nine-month adult aesthetics program is $5,700. The classes meet from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Both programs will prepare students to take the state licensing test at the end of the program, which means students can leave EVIT as licensed aestheticians and cosmetologists.

Cosmetology has gone Crazy

Cosmetology students competed in a "Crazy Hair Competition" today. And boy, was there some crazy hair:
